National Do Not Call Registry: where to check and register
Looking to register your own number or confirm your registration? Start with the official government website. Looking to screen a contact list? Use a DNC checker. These are different tasks.
Go directly to DoNotCall.gov to register or verify your personal number. Free DNC List is an independent service, not the FTC or a government website.
Choose the right starting point
| Your goal | Where to go |
|---|---|
| Register your own number | Official National Do Not Call Registry |
| Verify your official registration | The verification option on the government Registry website |
| Look for a match in this service's dataset | Free DNC List's single-number checker |
| Review a spreadsheet of phone numbers | CSV and Excel DNC scrubbing |
What happens after registration?
The FTC says online registrations require email confirmation within 72 hours. It can take up to 31 days for sales calls to stop. Registration does not itself block calls or prevent scammers from calling. See the FTC's Registry FAQ for the official process and limitations.
Why a checker and the Registry may answer differently
A website's lookup reflects the dataset it has loaded. Official registration is maintained by the Registry. A recently registered number may not be present in a third-party dataset yet. Check the activation date shown on our homepage and use the official website when your question is about your own registration status.
Our displayed activation date is the time an administrator made a verified dataset live. It is not a promise that every recent change in the government Registry has already reached this service.
About the optional paid application service
Free DNC List also offers an optional paid registration application service. That is a separate commercial service; paying us is not required to register directly with the government. Review the application page and service terms if you choose that option.
Checking numbers for a business
Do not confuse a lookup with authorization to contact a person. Business users need to evaluate their own calling practices. The FTC's guidance discusses using Registry data no more than 31 days old, company-specific suppression lists, and other obligations. Start with the FTC's Telemarketing Sales Rule guide.
