How to check a number on the DNC list
A DNC list check compares a phone number with a do-not-call dataset. Use the single-number checker for one number, or upload a spreadsheet when you need to review a list.
Check a single phone number
- Open the free DNC checker.
- Enter the 10-digit phone number, including its area code. A leading US country code of 1 and common punctuation are accepted.
- Select Check Number and review whether the number matches the active dataset.
- Note the dataset activation date displayed above the tools. It identifies the version currently used by this service.
You can use the single-number form without uploading a file. If you need to verify your own official registration, use DoNotCall.gov; our Registry guide explains the difference.
What the result means
| Result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| On the DNC list | The number was found in the dataset currently loaded by Free DNC List. |
| Not on the DNC list | The number was not found in that dataset. This is not confirmation of consent or permission to call. |
| Invalid number or an error | Correct the input or retry the check. Do not treat an unsuccessful request as a clear result. |
Checking a list of contacts
For a spreadsheet, use the bulk DNC scrubber workflow. Upload CSV, XLS, or XLSX, choose the phone-number column when prompted, and review the added DNC status in the processed CSV. Keep the original file so you can compare input and output counts.
The checker is built for US-style 10-digit numbers. It is not a worldwide registry search. A spreadsheet containing extensions, missing area codes, or multiple numbers in one cell should be cleaned before processing.
DNC lookup versus reverse phone lookup
These tools answer different questions. A DNC check looks for a do-not-call match. Reverse phone lookup typically tries to identify a number's owner. Free DNC List does not provide a person's name, address, or identity from a phone number, and a DNC result does not verify who currently owns it.
Use the result as one part of your review
The FTC describes additional responsibilities involving company-specific opt-outs, written procedures, and state rules. A dataset match alone does not determine whether a particular call is lawful. Consult the FTC's business guidance for the requirements relevant to your activity.
